About Better Credit Guide

We believe everyone deserves to understand their credit — without paying hundreds of dollars to a company.

Our Mission

Better Credit Guide was created for one simple reason: companies charge too much money to do what consumers can legally do themselves for free.

We kept seeing the same story. Someone finds an error on their credit report. They panic. They find a company promising to “fix” everything for $99 a month. Twelve months later, they’ve spent $1,200 — and they still don’t understand how their credit works.

That's backwards. The information to dispute errors, freeze your credit, and build better habits is already out there. It's just scattered across government websites, buried in PDFs, and written in language that feels designed to confuse you.

So we built the guide we wished we'd had: one clear, step-by-step resource that teaches you the entire process from start to finish. For $9. One time. No subscriptions. No gimmicks. Just the knowledge you need to take control.

How We Research Our Content

Every fact in this guide comes from a primary source. We don't guess. We don't repeat what we read on a random blog. We go straight to the source:

  • The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) — for dispute procedures and consumer rights
  • The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) — for fraud reporting and identity theft protocols
  • AnnualCreditReport.com — for the official free credit report process
  • FICO and VantageScore — for how credit scores are actually calculated
  • The Fair Credit Reporting Act — for the legal framework behind credit disputes

When laws change or procedures update, we update the guide. Because bad information is worse than no information.

Meet the Author

Daniel Petry — Founder & Author

Daniel Petry has spent more than 25 years working inside the credit, banking, and e-commerce industries. He has written two bestselling books on credit, created one of the first online credit catalogs, and played a direct role in helping major bank card programs, including Visa and MasterCard, expand into debit cards.

That background matters because credit can feel confusing on purpose. Most people are not trying to game the system. They just want to understand what is on their credit report, what their rights are, and what they can do about inaccurate or damaging information.

Better Credit Guide was created to make that process clearer.

This site combines real-world credit experience with research from official sources. It is not legal advice. It is not a miracle cure. It is a practical, plain-English guide for people who want to better understand their credit, take control of the process, and make smarter financial decisions without being talked down to or sold false promises.

Our Editorial Standards

Research-First

We only publish what we can verify from primary sources. If we can't find the original law, regulation, or official procedure, we don't include it. We link to our sources so you can check them yourself.

Regularly Updated

Credit laws and bureau procedures change. We review and update our content quarterly to make sure it reflects current reality. Every blog post shows a “last updated” date so you know how fresh the information is.

Transparent

When we recommend a product or service, we explain why. We don't accept sponsored placements or affiliate commissions in exchange for positive coverage. Our only product is the guide itself.
